In Physica, her classic work on health and healing, Saint Hildegard of Bingen wrote this:
Eaten daily on an empty stomach, they reduce mucus and all rottenness, take away halitosis and clear the eyes … whoever eats fried meat, fried fish or anything else fried, and suffer pain from it, should eat fennel or fennel seeds and will have less pain.
This is exactly what I did during the past week with all the oily and calorie rich foods consumed during Chinese New Year week. Bitter fennel tablets chewed or taken orally before a ‘rich meal’ made my stomach happy.
