Why Corticosteroids are ‘bad’ for you?

I see quite a number of patients with eczema and other skin diseases. It is particularly challenging (although not impossible) to treat those who had a long history of corticosteroids use, orally or topical.

This class of drugs is also used in autoimmune diseases (such as lupus, rheumatoid, multiple sclerosis, kidney transplant…etc.) and other inflammatory conditions such as asthma, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease etc.

Besides causing leaky gut syndrome (another big issue), corticosteroids hinder good wound healing. This is bad news for conditions such as diabetes (leg ulcer for example), skin diseases such as eczema and asthma.

Poor wound healing means increase risk of chronic low-grade inflammation, which is associated with higher risk for of almost all types cancers.

If you need to take steroids, supplement at least with Phyto-EFA. The combination of cold pressed, unadulterated plant seed oils has been shown to increase cellular oxygenation (which is the reason why you feel less fatigue after taking it) and cell repair.

Of course, the best thing to do is not to use any form of steroid in the first place. There are many safe phytotherapeutic agents we can use to treat the root causes of diseases.
