Statins increase risk of cataracts by 27%

I am not surprised by this finding though critics argued that the benefits outweigh the risk. In addition, the figure may even be higher since individual lifestyle habits vary – diet, stress level, emotional disposition, exercise, sleep quality etc.  Statins have been reported to increase the risk of diabetes and the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Products Agency of the UK has warned about the risk of sleep disturbances, memory loss, sexual dysfunction, depression and certain lung diseases.

Cholesterol is one of the most important components of every cell and thus for healthy eye cells. Statins work by reducing the liver’s production of cholesterol.

Wonder why your cholesterol keep increasing as you age, despite a healthy diet and exercise? This is because of the effects of ageing and cholesterol is produced by your liver to repair your blood vessels and tissues.  Heart attacks and stroke caused by high cholesterol is still a controversial topic. I have seen people on medications for both high blood and cholesterol medication and yet still suffer from stroke and heart attacks.

If you are on cholesterol drugs, protecting your vision with nutrition and especially with herbs are of utmost importance.

Phyllanthus emblica as in Phytolec is clinically shown in animal studies to delay development of diabetic cataract. Traditional medicine taught us that the herb is used for good eyesight and you take it with raw honey water on an empty stomach upon rising.  I found it’s effect enhanced when I take it with Gotu kola powder. I found is great for prevention of eye fatigue. Chronic eye fatigue, in turn, can lead to many vision problems. You don’t want to take your eyes for granted.
